Magento Connect offers a lot of free and paid Magento extensions and add-ons, and you can download and install them trough your Magento Connect system but : What if you’d like to take a look at the extension code before you decide to install it? Here are few useful tips and links for you:
There’s a very useful explanation on how Magento Connect 2.0 system archives and stores the Magento Add-ons on stackoverflow which basically explains how Magento Add-ons are archived and stored on Magento Servers and how you can download them by editing the url of the extension.
Here’s a generic sample of the url:
http://connect20.magentocommerce.com/community/{PACKAGE NAME}/{VERSION}/{PACKAGE NAME}-{VERSION}.tgz
and if you’d like to investigate further into the matter, there’s a very good explanation here.
Alternatively, if you don’t want to edit the urls and check for version and package names, there are few web services that will download the Magento Add-ons and extensions for you.
If you simply want to download the Magento extension and you have the Magento Connect 2.0 key, you can do it here by pasting the Magneto Connect key into the text area.
Another service allows you to browse the extensions, search them by name or keyword , shows you the versions and comments and offers a download option. You can take a look here. If you’d like to know what they’re all about, read it here
